Playout software is the program that runs a television channel: it plays the schedule, draws the graphics, marks the ad breaks and hands off a finished stream. It is sold three ways, and the checklist for judging it is the same under all three. This page covers what it does, what a playout server is, how to evaluate one, and what each shape costs.

What playout software does all day

At 8:59:58 the software knows that the news ends in two seconds, that a five-second ident follows, and that the film after it starts on frame one at 9:00:05. It cues the file, crossfades, keeps the logo in the corner, fires an SCTE-35 cue thirty seconds before the first break, and does this again every few minutes until the schedule runs out, at which point it fills from the library rather than going to black. What it is not is live-production software. A vision mixer or a desktop switcher takes cameras and sources and makes a programme; playout takes finished programmes and makes a channel. Many channels use both, and the seam between them is a live input the schedule switches to at the right time and back from when the show ends.

The software pre-installed on hardware sized for it: one channel, sometimes two, with the output card fitted. Simpler than a build, still a machine in a rack that ages into a replacement project.

A channel on a subscription

The same jobs run on the vendor’s servers, driven from a browser. Priced per channel per month; check whether delivery is included or metered, and what the viewer ceiling is. Nothing to buy, nothing to rack, and a second channel is a second row.

The playout server

The machine underneath, and whether you still need it

A playout server is a computer that does nothing else: storage fast enough to read two video files at once, a card that outputs SDI or a transport stream, and the headroom to decode, composite and encode without ever dropping a frame. The traditional build has two of them, a main and a backup, and a changeover switch between them, because a single server is a single point of failure for a channel that is expected to be on air every second of the year.

For a channel delivered over the internet, the server has not disappeared; it has moved. The cloud vendor runs it, sizes it per channel, watches it, and replaces it without a maintenance window. The parts you keep are the ones that matter to the channel, the schedule, the graphics, the cues, the guide, driven from a browser instead of a keyboard in a machine room. Where the server still earns its rack is a channel whose destination is a physical output: an SDI feed to a transmitter, a modulator, a headend that wants a card rather than a stream. Even then, a constant-bitrate SRT or RIST output from cloud playout feeds most of those from a small decoder at the far end, which is how the satellite migration and local cable setups run.

Evaluating it

Seven things to check, whichever shape

Feature lists say yes to everything. These are the questions where the answers differ, and they are the same for an installed licence and a cloud subscription.

  1. A schedule, not a playlist

    Recurring blocks, loops, series in order, and a way to fill a gap from the library so dead air never reaches a screen. A playlist plays files in order; a schedule knows what Tuesday at nine is.

  2. Graphics rendered into the picture

    Logo bug, clock, lower thirds, ticker, composited before encoding, so they are identical on a smart TV, a set-top box and VLC. An overlay bolted onto a player is not the same thing and disappears the moment the stream is carried elsewhere.

  3. SCTE-35 in the forms distributors ask for

    Both command forms, splice_insert and time_signal, the cue types a platform names in its carriage spec, and a cue profile that can differ per partner. "Supports SCTE-35" on a feature list can mean one shape of break.

  4. The outputs your destinations take

    HLS for players and smart TVs. SRT or RIST, constant bitrate, for a headend, a satellite uplink or a partner who wants a transport stream. RTMP for the social platforms. If a destination is missing, that channel needs a second product.

  5. Monitoring and fallback that do not need you

    Encoder restarts, output disconnects, frozen picture, a live feed dropping. What the software watches on its own, what it does when it sees a fault, and how you are told. A standby screen and an alert beat a phone call in the morning.

  6. A guide feed that follows the grid

    XMLTV and JSON generated from the schedule and regenerated when it changes, as many days ahead as your listings partners want. A guide that someone re-exports by hand is a guide that is wrong by the weekend.

  7. An as-run log

    What actually aired, when, with how much drift, and every ad cue that fired. This is the record a sponsor is shown and a distributor asks for, and it is the thing playlists never keep.

What each shape costs

Installed software is priced as a licence per channel, perpetual or annual, and the licence is the smaller half of the bill. Add the server, the second server if the channel matters, the output card, the storage, a support contract, and the person who knows the kit. It is a capital project that pays off over years, which is fine for a broadcaster with a portfolio of channels and an engineering floor, and a heavy way to find out whether a new channel has an audience.

Cloud playout is a subscription per channel. The number to look for is what is included: some vendors publish a flat monthly price with delivery inside it; others publish a rate per streaming hour or per gigabyte delivered, which reads cheap until you multiply by the roughly 730 hours a linear channel runs each month. What is playout software?

Can playout software run a cable or local channel?

Is there free playout software?

There are free tools that will play a folder of files in order, and free live-production software that will switch between sources. What the free tier of that world generally does not do is run a programme guide, signal breaks with SCTE-35, fail over on its own at 3am, or keep an as-run log. Those are the parts a channel gets asked for the moment it seeks carriage or sells an ad.
